Sales of Ultra High Relief Double Eagle gold coins have broken through the 80,000 barrier after demand proved "stronger than ever" during August.Since the US Mint launched the 24-c coin in January 2009, collectors have snapped up 80,700 Double Eagles at $1,300 (£791) each, Coin News reports.
The site said sales of the coin have been boosted by the mint's decision to lift its order limit from one coin per household to ten, which came into effect in July.
In the week to July 26th, the day before the new limit was introduced, the mint sold 855 Double Eagles. The following week, it sold 3,799.
Demand for the gold coins was also fuelled by the American Numismatic Association's World's Fair of Money, which took place in Los Angeles, California between August 5th and 9th.
Coin News said the US Mint's show booth was "bottlenecked" with collectors purchasing ten Double Eagles at a time.
The 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle features the Liberty design created in 1907 by Irish-born sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
