The Austrian Mint has confirmed plans to launch two new gold coins in 2010.

According to news site Silver Coins Today, next February will see the release of the latest addition to the Celebrated Physicians of Austria gold coin series.

The commemorative pieces will feature Nobel Prize winner Dr Karl Landsteiner, who developed the modern system of blood groups and co-discovered the Rh factor in 1937 with Alexander Wiener.

Dr Landsteiner's work is believed to have saved billions of lives worldwide by making blood transfusions safer.

The €50 coin struck in his honour will weigh ten grams and mintage is set to be limited to 50,000 pieces.

In November, the mint will issue a gold coin commemorating the Crowns of the House of Habsburg. This €100 coin will feature a depiction of the Hungarian Crown of St Stephen, which was placed atop the heads of over 50 Hungarian rulers since its creation in the 13th century.

The piece will be made from 98.6 per cent pure gold and only 30,000 will be struck.

Earlier this month, the Austrian Mint marked the 20th anniversary of the issue of its Gold Philharmonic coins by releasing a limited run of 6,027 20-ounce versions of the piece, Coin Update News reports.
