A €100 gold coin part of the Austrian Mint's Crowns of the House of Habsburg series has been launched.

The coin is available from today (November 4th) and takes on the theme of the so-called Archduke's Hat, which refers to the crown worn by Austrian archdukes and is derived from a red velvet cap that is fitted within the headpiece.

Archduke Maximilian III of Tyrol commissioned the current Archduke's Hat in 1616, before giving it to the Augustinian Abbey of Klosterneuburg. The crown itself features eight gold peaks embedded with enamel, pearls and precious stones.

Just 30,000 of the gold proof coins will be made available worldwide. Next year, the following coin in the Crowns of the House of Habsburg series will feature the Hungarian Crown of St Stephen.

A further two gold coins will be released in 2011 and 2012.

Last month, the Austrian Mint launched a commemorative 20-ounce gold coin marking the 20th anniversary of the release of the Vienna Philharmonic coin, which was made to mark the transfer of ownership of the Austrian Mint from the treasury to the central bank.
