Gold coins proposed to commemorate the 225th anniversary of the United States Marshals Service would include some features "unusual" for commemorative pieces, according to reports.A Senate bill is seeking the production of up to 100,000 $5 gold coins to mark the anniversary. Each coin would weigh 33.931 grams, have a diameter of 32.7mm and contain one troy ounce of gold, Coin Update News stated.
The site noted that these specifications are unusual for a commemorative coin as they are the same as those used for the one-ounce American Gold Eagle bullion coin, which carries a face value of $50.
In addition, the coins would be struck in high relief and feature the motto of the US Marshals - Justice, Integrity, Service - in edge lettering.
The use of high relief detail and edge lettering are characteristics of the popular 2009 Double Eagle gold coin, which features Augustus Saint-Gaudens's Liberty design originally produced for the 1907 version of the coin.
Under the terms of the bill, which would have to be approved by both the House and Senate and signed into law by the president, the US Marshals coins would not be issued until on or after September 24th 2014.
